Acklington based P-51D Mustang by J. Applegarth
Wings Over Northumberland Ltd has been created by Aviation Enthusiasts and Professionals from the North East of England. It is a NOT FOR PROFIT company.
Our aim is to preserve and promote the rich aviation heritage of the North of England. We are currently investigating a suitable site to host this venture.
WON’s principle aims are to:
- Amalgamate the various established collections within Northumberland and beyond by providing a permanent, publicly accessible home for these artefacts.
- Provide social interactivity by the creation of a volunteer based organisation.
- Educate the public about the North East’s forgotten heritage, and promote involvement in conservation and restoration.
- Promote an interest in aviation, local heritage and conservation.
- Provide a research archive for use by the public.
- To be self sustaining while providing a valuable contribution to the North East.
To do this, WON will consist of several key features:
- Aviation Heritage Centre
- An active aerodrome
- Military Vehicles
- Art Gallery
- Education Centre
- Research Centre
- Workshops and Stores
Our ideal site, selected by a two year long feasibility exercise, is the former RAF Morpeth. This derelict airfield is located near Tranwell Woods to the South West of Morpeth, Northumberland. We have discussed options with the land owners and we are confident that our plans could come to fruition.
We would like to hear your opinions of an active airfield and attached museum complex in this region, both good and bad! Please feel free to leave relevant comments, and we will endevour to keep you informed through regular updates of this unique project.
