Survey part 2
Rememberance Sunday 2009 was spent strapped into a Microlight attempting to view Tranwell Aerodrome from the air.
The airfield is located with Newcastle International Airport’s Class D airspace, and permission to overfly the site was quickly approved once the controller established that we were not en-route to Cranwell….
The above view shows how little is left of RAF Morpeth. In the bottom centre of the picture, the last remaining Miskins Blister hangar is visible, and the outline of the maintenance site can be seen (bottom left). The concrete is still there, just buried under a couple of inches of mud. The bottom right corner is still in use as a car boot sale area, and is in good condition. The T1 hangars were in this location, but the only remains are the door runners. The aerodrome site is to the top left.
The aerodrome site: The future runway will run parallel to, and (in this picture) slightly beyond the original runway which runs across the picture.
The same area but viewed from the north west.
The airfield is surrounded on three sides by protected woodland. To the left side of the picture is Tranwell Woods – there are some VERY exclusive houses there…. In the centre, almost on the horizon is Newcastle Airport. In reallity it is 6 miles south.
